1.) Not understanding your equipment

No, you certainly don’t have to memorize the instruction manual from front to back before taking your new camera out for a spin. However, it doesn’t hurt to devote some energy into actually learning about all the various functions you paid for when you purchased your camera. It can be as simple as regularly devoting time to learn ONE new function and use it to take experimental photographs during a photo session.

2.) Too much clutter

When we look at a landscape the brain automatically filters out objects that we find uninteresting, the camera however do not do that and it captures everything in the scene. Before taking a photograph, decide what you wish to capture in this picture and then look for items that may distract the viewer from that. Over cluttered pictures with a clear main object is a common beginner mistake.

3.) Always shooting from eye level

Don’t always take picture from a standing position. You will often get better pictures if you experiment with the angel. Try taking pictures from above or below, strive to reflect objects in a different way than the way we usually see them.

4.) Premature photo deletion

Many beginners delete bad pictures almost instantly after having taken them without even looking at them in the computer. That is a mistake because it is very hard to tell the quality of a picture in the camera LCD display. If you take a lot of pictures it is worth buying a high-capacity card. If you have a high-capacity card you never need to delete picture before having viewed them at home. Picture that seem bad on the LCD display might turn out to be great when you get to see a larger copy.

5.) Being too shy to ask for help

If you dislike involving other people in you’re photographic endeavours than that’s naturally fine and dandy and not a beginner mistake. If you on the other hand would like to get some input form fellow photographers but are to intimidated by their experience to even approach them, then you are making a common beginner mistake. There are a lot of people out there who love to share their knowledge with beginners and thanks to the advent of the Internet finding them is now easier than ever. You can find a lot of photography guides online as well as a large number of photography forums on which photographers meet to share experiences and tips. There are a lot of general photo sites as well as a lot of niche photo sites if you are mote interested in a certain niche such as wildlife photography. Try joining a tropical fish photo community, join a local community or visit a photo museum to get inspired.
