I use a point-and-shoot Canon Powershot and have loved it. I’m inclined to stick with Canon when I upgrade.

Thanks for this list. I have now an idea for my very first DSLR camera. I only have a point and shoot camera and plans to go for dslr. Although this post gave me some pointers, I know I still need to research more because for now, all I know is that the higher the MPixels, the better. I got the feeling that this may not necessarily be the best factor to base for choosing a camera.

Actually James, more Mpixels aren’t always better, especially for someone upgrading to a DSLR. Anything over 6 Mpixels is fantastic for a dslr camera. Not unless you plan on printing poster sized prints. Then you’ll need more Mpixels. Save the money and take a class or two at your local camera shop. That will help you take better photos.

If I were just getting started, I’d get a lower cost Rebel and a decent lens. You could rock some pretty amazing images with this combination.
