I'd suggest getting the highest specs that you can afford - the rate of improvement is such that anything short of top notch will look pedestrian in two years time. So any extra money spent now on the purchase will be more than compensated for in the money saved in not having to upgrade quite so soon.

I use a Canon 7D, which is fantastic and have just bought a Canon 15-85mm to go with out, after getting a little ticked off with the quality from a Tamron 18-270. So far, thrilled with the lens and the camera is superb. Usability really is improved when you move further up the range.

If I were just getting started, I'd get a lower cost Rebel and a decent lens. You could rock some pretty amazing images with this combination.

Actually James, more Mpixels aren't always better, especially for someone upgrading to a DSLR. Anything over 6 Mpixels is fantastic for a dslr camera. Not unless you plan on printing poster sized prints. Then you'll need more Mpixels. Save the money and take a class or two at your local camera shop. That will help you take better photos.

Thanks for this list. I have now an idea for my very first DSLR camera. I only have a point and shoot camera and plans to go for dslr. Although this post gave me some pointers, I know I still need to research more because for now, all I know is that the higher the MPixels, the better. I got the feeling that this may not necessarily be the best factor to base for choosing a camera.

I use a point-and-shoot Canon Powershot and have loved it. I'm inclined to stick with Canon when I upgrade.
