Is creativity required for photography?
I know most professional photographers would say “YES!” But I’m not so sure it’s a requirement. Creativity is very beneficial to photography, but I don’t think you need to be a creative person to take good photographs.
But if you are not naturally creative, I think you need to take extra steps to improve your photographs. Tasra over at Tasramar.com suggest 3 basic things to do to take better pictures.
3 Basic Things to do to Improve your Photography
Take your camera with you
Everywhere! By doing that, you will take more pictures. Take at least one photo every day. And taking more pictures, even bad ones, can’t help but improve your photography.
Read your manual
I know, boring right? But even experienced photographers get into ruts. Like using the same settings all the time. And even though it might be boring… it doesn’t take that long… and think about all the great new things you will learn?
Study the pros
Look at 1 photograph a day, taken by a pro. Study the composition and the lighting. See if you can ‘see’ the post processing. Look a photos online or in a photography book.
And I would add
Study your own photographs. What don’t you like about it? The composition? The lighting? Many times we can start to see what we could have done to improve the shot.
The end result
The end result is that you will miraculously take better photographs. So if someone asks you if creativity is required for photography, you can answer “YES!” like a professional. But you don’t have to share the fact that creativity can be learned.
