Landscape photography is one of the most popular forms of photography. I think people really enjoy capturing natural beauty. You don’t need fancy lights or fancy equipment.
- Do Some Planning. In landscape photography, you need to think about composition. The rule of thirds, focal points and framing. Be aware that landscapes change. The clouds move, the light changes, so be ready to shoot.
- Play With Focal Points And Depth. Focus on the foreground, middle ground, or background. Or pick a specific object to be the focal point. This becomes the attention getter.
- Tripod, Tripod, Tripod. Get a tripod and a remote release and your landscape photography will improve today. You would be surprised how much shake you can get when pressing the shutter. Plus, a tripod helps you think about composition. And get a wireless remote if you can. Prevents tripping over the wire and toppling your equipment. This way, you can increase your shutter speed. And you can get interesting shot of water, wind blown grass, clouds, trees in the wind, or whatever else may show slight motion.
- Filters are Fun. If you are limited on lenses, try a filter to change the look of your shot. Try density filters, which effect the amount of light entering the lens, polarizing filters, which eliminate the haze from direct sunlight and adds saturation to your composition, and color filters, which add a distinct hue to your photographs.
- Same Shot Different Angle. Some of the best landscape photography is shot from unusual angles. Try moving around to change the angle of the shot. Try shooting from above or below your subject.
- Know Your Equipment. This can’t be emphasized enough. Read the manual, but make sure you play with the camera. Practice changing the ISO and shutter speeds. Take some test shots. Take a photography class and get to know your camera inside and out. And shoot in RAW format if you can. You don’t want to catch a shot of a lifetime and not have it be the best it can be.
- Experiment. Experimentation leads to some of the best shots you’ll take. It will help you develop your style. Many photographers have gone out for an entire day and only returned with a few good shots, and sometimes with none at all. Don’t get discouraged. Look over your shots and see if you can learn anything.
Good landscape photography doesn’t happen overnight. But using these tips will make a big improvement immediately. If you have any landscape photography tips or photos, leave them in the comments.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
I just retired and am pursuing my hobby of photography. I made the investment of buying a Panasonic dmc-lx5 which is a digital compact camera just a step down from the ones where you change the lens. I am having a ball! When it comes to all of the controls, your articles are really helping me. Got a long way to go, though. I’ll be visiting your site again to learn even more.
